Nerve Injury

Nerve injuries are often the result of trauma, such as lacerations, compressions, electrical injuries, stretching or traction injuries or gunshot wounds. Nerves can also be damaged by chronic conditions, such as diabetes. Diagnostic testing for nerve injuries include MRIs and CT scans. Those tests can evaluate the extent of the injury and the severity. We offer a variety of treatment options for nerve injuries. Our treatment options do not involve surgery.

We can treat these injuries with orthotics, physical therapy, rehabilitation, medications, lifestyle changes and weight loss management. Your treatment plan is individually catered to address your needs. No two treatment plans are the same as we design a plan that is targeted toward addressing the needs of that individual.

Each treatment plan is dependent upon the severity of the injury, the location of the injury and the classification of the injury. The Sunderland Classification System divides the injury into five parts, from a first-degree injury to a fifth-degree injury. Each classification involves whether or not the injury can be corrected. A first-degree injury, for example, has a reversible conduction block at the site of the injury that can be treated without surgery. However, a fifth-degree injury has a nerve that is cut in two and that can only be repaired by surgery.
