Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is a deep, intense pain that is often the result of tissue injury. Oftentimes, the tissue injury is the result of a chronic medical condition, such as diabetes. Neuropathic pain can be resulting from nerve fibers that are damaged, injured or dysfunctional. Because of the damage, the fibers send incorrect signals to other pain centers.

Diabetics may suffer from diabetic neuropathy, which is most often in the legs and feet. Phantom limb syndrome is sometimes experienced by individuals who have undergone amputation. The nerves that carried impulses from the missing limb continues to send those messages to the brain, leading it to believe that the limb is still there and in pain.

Other causes of neuropathic pain are chemotherapy, facial nerve problems, Multiple Sclerosis, shingles, alcoholism or spine surgery. Those with neuropathic pain suffer shooting and burning pain and/or tingling and numbness.

Treatment options are available for those suffering from neuropathic pain. If the pain is the result of a chronic health condition, better management of the condition can alleviate the pain. Sometimes electrical stimulation or an implantable device may be beneficial. Medications may help, such as anti-inflammatory pain medications, anticonvulsants or antidepressants.

Standard pain treatments usually have no impact on neuropathic pain. We can assess your situation and derive a personalized treatment plan to help you get the maximum results.
